Emma Stone Criticizes Critics After Receiving Critics’ Choice Award Says, ‘I’m Just Learning Not To… ‘

Reflecting on the transformative role that saw her inhabit a character with an infant's brain, Stone humorously acknowledged the impact critics have on the industry.

The 2024 Critics Choice Awards have crowned Emma Stone as the best movie actress of the year, adding another prestigious accolade to her collection.

On Sunday, Stone received the coveted award for her exceptional portrayal of Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” Expressing her genuine surprise during the acceptance speech, the 35-year-old actress exclaimed, “I’m in full-blown shock right now. This is completely crazy.”

Reflecting on the transformative role that saw her inhabit a character with an infant’s brain, Stone humorously acknowledged the impact critics have on the industry. “Playing Bella was one of the greatest joys of my life. I got to unlearn a lot of things in playing her. Unlearn parts of shame and societal stuff that gets put on us, and I’m still working on it,” she shared.

Injecting a bit of humor, Stone quipped, “This is the Critics Choice Awards — and it is about outside opinion — but I’m very grateful to the critics for this. But I’m just learning not to care what you think.”

In a gracious gesture, Stone also acknowledged her fellow nominees in the category, personally mentioning Lily Gladstone, Sandra Hüller, Greta Lee, Carey Mulligan, and Margot Robbie. She expressed her disbelief at winning among such remarkable talent, stating, “This doesn’t make any sense, so thank you so much for this, it means so much to me. I was being serious. I don’t know what to say.”

Emma Stone’s Critics Choice Awards triumph follows her recent success at the 2024 Golden Globes, where she secured the title of best film actress in a comedy or musical.
