Renowned Singer Asha Bhosle Turns 83

World renowned singer Asha Bhosle turns 83 on September 8 this year. Marathi film producer and director, Mahesh Tilekar has planned a gala event on her birthday in Mumbai this year.

Asha Bhosle's career spans over six decades and she has sung for thoudands of Bollywood movies and in addition, she has recorded numerous private albums. Asha Didi’s work spans over a varied spectre of music including pop, ghazals, bhajans, Indian classical, folk music, qawwali's and Ranbindra sangeet. Besides, she has sung in over 20 foreign and Indian languages. In 2006, the veteran singer had sung over 12,000 songs and her name has been included in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “Most Recorded Artist” in music history. She has coveted the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. Asha Bhosle was born in the small hamlet of Goar in Sangli, in musical family of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar, a theater actor and classical singer. When she was nine years old, her father died. The family moved from Pune to Kolhapur and then to Mumbai. She and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in films to support their family. Her achievements are so great that her works cannot be compiled in a short span. Her first song was, "Chala Chala Nav Bala" for the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943). The music for the film was composed by Datta Davjekar. She made her Hindi film debut when she sang the song "Saawan Aaya" for Hansraj Behl's Chunariya (1948). Her first solo Hindi film song was for the movie Raat Ki Raani (1949). At the age of 16, she eloped with 31-year-old Ganpatrao Bhosle, marrying him against her family's wishes. The marriage didn't last long and in the 60's she left him and came to her maternal home with two children and pregnant with her third child. She continued to sing in films to earn money. At that time, prominent playback singers like Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar dominated the music world of the film industry. Due to her sexy voice, she started singing songs for B or C-grade films. Her earliest songs were composed by A R Qureshi, Sajjad Hussain and Ghulam Mohammed, and most of these songs failed to do well at the box office. Director Bimal Roy gave her a chance in Parineeta (1953), Raj Kumar signed her for Boot Polish (1954). It was music director O.P,Nayyar who noticed her voice and gave her a break in C.I.D (1956) and there was no looking back for her. She signed B.R. Chopra's Naya Daur in 1957 the songs were a super hit. Penned by Sahir Ludhianvi she got instant recognition. She went on to sing for films like Gumrah (1963), Waqt (1965), Hamraaz (1965), Aadmi Aur Insaan (1966) and Dhund (1973). In 1966 she recorded songs for Music director R.D. Burman for the film Teesri Manzil. The songs went on to become the chart buster of the year and are popular even today. After the 80's she decided to sing ghalzals and in 1981 she changed her tracks to ghazals with Umrao Jaan. The songs are popular even today. The ghazals won her the first “National Film Award” of her career. A few years later, she won another National Award for the song "Mera Kuchh Saamaan" from Ijaazat (1987). In 1995, the 62-year-old singer worked with A.R. Rahman in Rangeela. The singer had then stated, "I don't know what he is doing. He records a track and then makes me sing a mukhda and then makes me do something else but the end results are stunning. They went on to do many films together. In 2000, she sang songs for movies like Lagaan (2001), Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2001), Filhaal (2002), and Lucky (2005). In 2013, Bhosle plunged into acting for the first time with the film “Mai” in the title role, at the age of 79. Bhosle played the role of a 65-year-old mother who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and is abandoned by her children. She received a lot of critical acclaim for her acting career. She went on to sing under various music directors right from O.P. Nayyar, Ravi, Madan Mohan, A.R.Rahman, Jaidev and R.D.Burman. Asha considered Jaidev a close friend who stood by her when she was struggling personally and professionally. Upon his death in 1987, she released a compilation album of lesser-known songs he had composed for her, called Suranjali. She married R.D.Burman in 1980's and together they created havoc in music. He made her sing songs in Bengali as well. Later, she also worked with composer Illayaraaja in the early 80's and did South films like Moondram Pirai (1982), Enga Ooru Paattukkaaran, (1987) and Hey Ram (2000). In 1995, Asha underwent the gatha bandan (thread-tying) ceremony with Hindustani classical music maestro Ali Akbar Khan to learn a classical repertoire. Later, Asha and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan recorded eleven fixed compositions (or bandishes) in California for Legacy, a private album that earned them a Grammy Award nomination. In 1980s and 1990s, Asha Bhosle travelled to various countries and performed in 13 US cities in 20 days. She started collaborating with Western singers, in 1997 she sang a love song with the boy band, Code Red, at the age of 64. She also recorded the song "The Way you Dream". One Giant Leap with Michael Stipe that was part of the English movie, Bulletproof Monk. The song was also released on the album 1 Giant Leap for 2002. In 1990s, Asha experimented with remixed R.D. Burman songs she also did a private Indi-pop album Janam Samjha Karo with Lesle Lewis. In 2002, she turned music composer with the album Aap Ki Asha, an eight-song music and video album. The lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri (his last lyrics). She went on to record an album, “Asha and Friends” where she sang song with Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Matondkar, Cricketer Brett Lee. Asha Bhosle is also a successful restaurateur and runs restaurants in Dubai and Kuwait, called Asha's, which offers traditional north-western Indian cuisine. It has a presence in the Wafi City development in Dubai, as well as three restaurants in Kuwait, at The Avenues Mall, the Marina Mall and a brand new third outlet at the Spoons Complex. She personally trained the chefs for almost six months. As part of her chain of restaurants, she recently opened a new restaurant in Birmingham, UK.
