Marlon Brando is most commonly known by his fans for his role in ‘The Godfather’ and it is interesting to note that it almost didn’t happen because the actor was seen as being so toxic by the Paramount Studios at the time of casting. Meanwhile, Director of the movie, Francis Ford Coppola was relentless in his pursuit of the right cast for his character of Don Vito Corleone.

In an interview that the director gave Annette Insdorf, an acclaimed critic, Coppola revealed about how Marlon Brando morphed into his Oscar-winning character with some random props and some household items. Coppola remembered the time when they went to Brando’s house n Mulholland Drive on one early morning, so early that the actor event wasn’t up yet. The knocked on his door and he came out wearing a Japanese robe.

Marlon Brando noticed that the director had some props with him that he had set out. The props included things like Italian meats, cheeses, and cigars. The actor looked at all the props and figured out himself on what was going on. So he took his hair and did it up in the back, blackened his hair with some shoe polish and put on a shirt. The actor also suggested that the character should be hoarse like a bulldog, so he took some Kleenex tissues and stuffed into his mouth to attain that look and started acting for the character without saying any line. The actor also got a phone call in those moments that he received while being in character.

Studio Executives from Paramount were so impressed with his character that they immediately signed him up for the role.
