Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation Review

Dracula and the good-hearted ghouls, ghosts and vampires are all back in a cute world of their own. Their bete noire Van Helsing hasn't succeeded all these centuries in annihilating the monsters, so they're alive and kicking. Even falling in love and raising a family like Drac's daughter Mavis and her DJ husband Johnny do.

But Drac's been off-colour lately and daughter Mavis plans a monster vacation, a monster cruise for all of them.

Drac's not really enthused about it, calling it just another hotel on the water. But he perks up when he meets Ericka the captain of the ship, a human. And zing, or love in the monster dictionary, happens to him again. He follows her, he does a sprightly dance with her, he rescues her from disaster like a chivalrous gentleman and he's bashful about admitting that he's in love. But heartbreak is lurking around the corner for Ericka is a woman on a secret mission that isn't good news for the monsters.

Director Genndy Tartakovskyhas a storyline with great potential to have loads of fun on the cruise with all of Drac's monster buddies on board. But this trip to Atlantis which resembles Las Vegas is as exciting as going to the casino and finding gambling and drinking aren't allowed there anymore. For all the variety of monsters lined up, there could've been a lot of merriness but what comes at you is weariness.

The family theme continues and inclusiveness in a world of diversity where monsters and humans can co-exist, even co-habit with love, is woven in which are fine social messages for all. If only some rollicking fun had come along too, it would've been a perfect family holiday.

Adam Sandler's voiceover for Dracula is, as always, the star of the franchise. Supporting voices that make the Transylvania family seem human include Selena Gomez for daughter Mavis and Andy Samberg for Johnny.

The best part is the climax where there's a musical stand-off between Van Helsing and Johnny DJ which has more life than the rest of the journey.

The Verdict

Transylvania is a franchise that kids adore. Just make it more entertaining for the adults watching it too, please.

For an animation film in 3D which very little kids will watch but doesn’t refresh the franchise in any way, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation gets a 2.5* rating.
