Kalank Review

The fine costumes, the heavy jewels, the delicate lighting, the flawless choreography, the sweeping camera, the lyrical music-everything about Kalank seems to draw from the style of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's cinema, which is great because Kalank looks glorious, it is dazzling. Everything is perfect. But one thing that we don't want to see from Bhansali's movies in Abhishek Varman's Kalank is the strained writing, which is noticeable in the trailer itself. Everything is amplified in scale and the writing also succumbs to the same pressure. Kalank is a period piece indeed, but being lyrical is one thing and being maladroit is another. Unfortunately for Kalank, it veers towards the latter.

Set in 1945, in Pre-Independence India, Kalank is a tale of eternal love. After lifting the anticipation of the patrons with the teaser, posters and songs from the film, the makers of the Abhishek Varman's ‘Kalank' raised the curtains from the official trailer today. The producers also introduced a new cast member from the film at the launch which was confirmed by Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt who shared the news with their fans on social media. Apart from the star cast ensemble, a new addition to the cast has made the fans more curious. It turns out that the new cast member is none other than actor Kunal Khemu himself.

Kalank is Produced by Karan Johar, Sajid Nadiadwala, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta. Fox Star Studios, Dharma Productions, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment are the production companies. The film is distributed by Fox Star Studios.

Made on a budget of 80 crores, Kalank stars Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha, Kunal Khemu and Hiten Tejwani among others. Kalank is written by Shibani Bhatija. The dialogues are written by Hussain Dalal and the director Abhishek Varman wrote the screenplay himself. Pritam is the music director of Kalank which is scored by Sanchit Balhara. Binod Pradhan is the cinematographer and Shweta Venkat Mathew has edited the film.

The film was conceptualised by Johar and his father Yash Johar around fifteen years ago. Actress Sridevi was initially signed for the character role played by Madhuri Dixit. Production designer Amrita Mahal was brought onboard to work on the set's design and structure that represented old Delhi mohalla with a mahal in Film City, Mumbai.

The trailer opens with Roop (Alia Bhatt) saying, "Mere gusse mein liye gaye ek faisle ne...hum sabki zindagi barbaad kar di." She later says, "Mere paas khone ko kuch hai hi nahi" to Zafar (Varun Dhawan) who asks her, "Himmat hai meri duniya mein kadam rakhne ki?" Other major dialogues are when Dev Chaudhry (Aditya Roy Kapur) says to Satya (Sonakshi Sinha), "Mat kar ye koshish meri zindagi sudharne ki, kahin aur na bigad jaye". Madhuri Dixit's single dialogue is a heavy one, "Najaayaz mohabbat ka anjaam, aksar tabaahi hota hai." The trailer ends with Zafar announcing, "Roop ki mohabbat mera haq hai, aur ye haq main le kar rahunga."

The film will hit the theatres on April 17, 2019.
