Welcome To New York Review

This is clever. Wizcraft, the events company whose IIFA is one of the biggest awards functions of the Hindi film industry, makes a carefully-budgeted movie that marks 30 successful years in showbiz. It entertains just like their events do and it is brand building for IIFA too.

Sara Bodinar's story is funny and fresh, and unfolds without complication.

Lara Dutta is Sophie, IIFA organiser Gary's right hand person and main think tank. But she's got a little axe to grind with Gary and has a devious plan up her sleeve to sabotage the event in New York. She picks up two rejects from Punjab and Gujarat and presents them as IIFA's discoveries of the day, sure that they'll sink the show.

The good news is that this Punjab-Gujarat combination works better than Harry &Sejal did last year.

Punjab da puttar Diljit Dosanjh is the big draw out here as Teji who's obsessed with acting. Director Chakri Toleti makes it refreshing with Teji going into a performance the moment he spots a mirror. And Diljit brings on the smiles with his high fives and tick-perfect comic timing.

He insists on calling designer Jinal Patel from Gujarat ‘darji madam' but their growing friendship has a clean, smooth, upward graph.Sonakshi Sinha as Jinal also gets into the groove and has a pleasant chemistry with Diljit.

Cast in a double role as Karan and Arjun, Karan Johar brings his ability to make fun of himself to the table. A rapid-fire round in the lift with Teji is hilarious and I loved Karan's jibes at his own obsession with brands or taking Rana Daggubatti's call only because he's had a hit.

Of course, Riteish Deshmukh's sense of comedy continues to be perfect. This is an actor whose special talent for tickling the funny bone is always a pleasure to watch.

Given the brand value of IIFA, the film is able to draw guest appearances from a huge galaxy of stars topped with Salman Khan.

The Verdict

What gave me relief was that this was not chaotic, overloud comedy. A slow starter, one hopes that it picks up with the multiplex crowd that will connect with its urban wit.

For an unpretentiously fun film that’s watchable, Welcome To New York gets a 3* rating.
