Sui Dhaaga-Made in India Review

Mauji is an optimist who takes his father's put-downs and his boss' humiliating treatment in his stride. Whatever the situation, Mauji wears a smile and a ‘sab badiya hai'. Until his wife, Mamta urges him to consider self-respect, self-belief and self-employment.

It takes writer-director Sharat Katariya a little over two hours to narrate the simple tale of Mauji and Mamta who overcome very predictable odds to become champions of designer wear.

Katariya's writing is full of stock situations and sentiments that include a huge hospital bill for Mauji's mother and family and friends who are unhelpful, resentful and turn their backs on Mauji when the chips are down. When they return at the first sign of success, that's expected too. The poor winning over the rich and the David and Goliath syndrome is sweet in its intent but stodgy in its telling.

‘Dream big' may sound nice as a theme but Katariya is unable to tell an interesting story. Blatant in-film advertising is a put-off and, for a story so grounded, the simplistic narration is like a fairy tale. Made In India makes a great slogan but what's made should have something refreshing in it. The dialogues too are barely average.

Varun Dhawan's sincerity as Mauji helps the film stay afloat. Anushka Sharma is uninspired as the wife who covers her head all the time, playing the traditional bahu. Raghubir Yadav as Mauji's cynical father is annoyingly predictable.

The story and the story-telling are as slim as thread and a needle.

The Verdict

For a film that has the right spirit but is listless in its narration, Sui Dhaaga gets a 2* rating.
