Section 375 Review

Rarely does Hindi cinema come up with a crisply told courtroom battle that actually leaves the viewer wondering whether justice has been delivered after a judgement has been passed. As ace defence lawyer Tarun Saluja tells a classroom of law students, law and justice are different, justice is abstract, law is focused and precise.

Writer-director Ajay Bahl puts film director Rohan Kapoor in the dock for a rape. Accusing him is junior costume designer Anjali Damle. Using the performance skills of Akshaye Khanna as defence lawyer Tarun Saluja, the director creates an engrossing case which has layers and layers as the scenes unfold. The hysteria of various righteous groups that want to hang the man immediately. The social media trial outside the courtroom. The #MeToo movement. The judgmental all-too-quick public. The loss of a man's reputation and his rights. The unfairness of male power and the downside of jumping to conclusions. Story writer Manish Gupta touches briefly but effectively on all that's contemporary and relevant in the misuse of power by one gender over the other.

What is skillful is the gender balance maintained by the creative team. You can't glibly take a woman's word and hang a man's reputation. But you can't take a man's word either. The screenplay is tight, there isn't one extra scene that you wish hadn't been added. The length of just about two hours,a perfect pace and the English-Hindi-Marathi mix make this an ideal multiplex watch.

How a man can abuse his power and how the law against rape can be used and misused are sensitive areas to tread but the filmmaker puts justice itself in the dock as he takes a bold look at the legal system and the games genders play.

Section 375 is elevated to fine cinema with Akshaye Khanna's suave, snarky and superb performance. He is aided by well-penned lines that are hard hitting as well as humorous. Richa Chadha as the determined prosecutor is impressively fiery. And there's a first-rate two-judge bench that adds to the authentic ambience of a courtroom.
