Serena Williams' embarrassing moment ahead of match against Simona Halep

Serena Williams suffered quite an embarrassing moment before her match with Romanian tennis star Simona Halep as she walked out when the announcer said 'presenting the world No 1' (when that is her opponent Simona Halep!) and soon takes a hasty U-turn

Serena Williams was beyond mortified as she walked into the Rod Laver Arena for her crucial Australian Open match. Serena was already in the tunnel and walked on the court with the Melbourne crowd cheering before she realised she had mistimed her entrance and the cheers were not intended for her. She walked out when her opponent's name, the world No. 1 Simona Halep, was being announced. Halep too smiled at her opponent's mix-up and walked out while waving to the crowd a few moments later.

Serena was forced to make a U-turn after suffering the awkward gaffe. Serena was also seen laughing off the gaffe as she walked back into the tunnel. After being at No. 1 for a remarkable 319 weeks during her career, it's a gaffe that is actually perfectly understandable. Serena slipped down the tennis rankings after she missed a number of tournaments having giving birth.

However Serena defeated Halep 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, and her rankings counted for nothing in the match as she reached the quarter-finals of the tournament. After the match, Serena said, "It is great to be back out and playing again on this court. I really needed to elevate my game. She's the No 1 player in the world and there's a reason why. She's a great player. In order for me to stay out there, I had to play like I knew I could. I did and I think that was the difference. I am such a fighter and just never give up. Today I just worked so hard for every point. It is a miracle that I'm here and that I get to do something that I enjoy. This is my job, to come out and lay in front of you guys."

Serena will now play against Karolina Pliskova in the last eight on Wednesday.
