IPL 2019 CSK vs RCB: The Rivalry Continues

There is no formal opening ceremony in IPL 2019 but the opener between the two arch-rivals Chennai and Bangalore is nothing short of a ceremony in itself. Even though CSK vs RCB head-to-head is in favour of CSK who leads with 15-7 across 23 matches, the rivalry means more to the fans of the two teams and the neutrals than it does to the player themselves, which is a fortunate thing.

India play over 40 international games across formats on average in a calendar year. There are also 56 T20 in total in a typical IPL season which has a separate window in BCCI schedule. The matches come and go, but the great ones remain fresh in our memories for years. IPL is in its 12th year, and there have been many rivalries that have emerged over the years. Chennai Super Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore is the biggest one of them.

CSK have won the IPL thrice, while RCB have choked in the finals thrice. Out of seven games that RCB have played in Chennai, they have lost six of them which includes IPL 2011 final. Last time RCB beat CSK was in 2014. CSK brings out the best of choker within RCB as they snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, or if you're RCB, then defeat from the jaws of victory-Albie Morkel smashed the leather out of Virat Kohli's gentle mediums for 28 as CSK hunted down RCB's 205 like a boss. And who can forget RP Singh's sinful no-ball that had Ravindra Jadeja caught at third man which birthed the 'Sir Jadeja' memes.

Chennai Super Kings Probable XI: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 David Willey, 11 Mohit Sharma

Royal Challengers Bangalore Probable XI: 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Moeen Ali, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Shivam Dube, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Tim Southee, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Mohammad Siraj, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal

Umesh Yadav got the new ball to swing and picked 14 wickets at a measly economy rate of 6.70 in the Powerplay overs, easily the best. No doubt Kohli will utilize his 3 overs upfront or may even bowl 4 if he is in a good spell. Until Nathan Coulter-Nile joins the squad, Tim Southee will take the load of bowling couple of overs at the death. Chahal too has experience of bowling in the powerplay and death as a wicket-taking option. RCB's long weakness has been their death bowling which conceded 11.90 in the last six overs, the worst across all teams last year.

Shimron Hetmyer has already established himself as a typical explosive Caribbean batsman in his brief international career. In 58 innings, he has already hit 67 sixes. He takes particular liking towards the spinners. On his recent subcontinent tour, which was his first, he showed more resolve and patience than the more experienced teammates across formats. If he clicks in what will be his first crack at IPL, RCB will have a formidable batting line-up which already has undoubtedly great batsmen like de Villiers and Kohli.

Kohli has scored 732 runs against CSK which are the most by a batsman against them in the IPL. His opposite number Dhoni has scored 710 runs which are also the most by a batsman against RCB in the IPL. Although Shane Watson has retired from international cricket, he showed in the IPL final last year that he is still a big match player with a match winning century, his second of the season. He enters the IPL in red-hot form having finished the PSL as the highest run-scorer, amassing 430 runs in 12 innings at strike rate of 143.80. Even in the double round-robin BBL played in December-January, he was one of the top-ten run-getters.

IPL 2019 Opening match CSK vs RCB will be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The match will begin at 8 PM. It will telecast Live on Star Sports and on DD Sports Terrestrial Network. All matches can also be streamed on Hostar, Jio TV and Airtel TV.
