Lok Sabha Polls: Everything you need to know about voting in the first phase

The polling for the first phase of seven phases of 17th Lok Sabha election begins today. Amidst the rising battle of words between all the political parties, people are ready to cast votes in 91 constituencies in 20 states and union territories. As per the reports of Election Commission, this is the third-biggest of the phases with more than 14 crore total voters including 7.22 crore male, 6.99 crore female and 7,764 third gender voters.

The polling for the first phase of seven phases of 17th Lok Sabha election begins today. Amidst rising battle of words between all the political parties, people are ready to cast votes in 91 constituencies in 20 states and union territories. As per the reports of Election Commission, this is the third-biggest of the phases with more than 14 crore total voters including 7.22 crore male, 6.99 crore female and 7,764 third gender voters.

The first phase of election will be held in the major parts of the North East region. The other states include Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. The Union Territories included in the first phase of polls are Lakshadweep, and Andaman and the Nicobar Islands.

Uttar Pradesh

A total of 1,52,68,056 voters will exercise their voting rights at 16,635 polling booths in the state. Voting in the first phase of elections will be held at 8 of 80 constituencies in the state. The total number of candidates contesting the election is 96. In 2014 Bhartiya Janata Party has managed to win all the eight constituencies. However, this time it has been said BSP-SP alliance can cause a dent in the ruling party's vote share.

Jammu and Kashmir

A total 33, 17, 882 voters in Jammu and Kashmir will cast their vote for 2 out of 6 Lok Sabha seats. Total of 33 candidates contesting the election. However, the major fight in Jammu is between BJP's Jugal Kishore, and Congress' Raman Bhalla.

Bihar

Over 74,40,334 voters in Bihar will decide the destiny of 44 candidates. The first phase of election in the state will take place in 4 out of 40 seats. There is a total of 7,486 polling booths in the state.   

Arunachal Pradesh

Voters in Arunachal Pradesh will cast vote on 2 out of 2 seats. There is a total of 2,202 polling booths where 7,98, 248 voters will decide the fate of 12 candidates.

Assam

Voting for the first phase of General Election in Assam will be held at 5 out of 14 Lok Sabha seats. A total of 76,03,458 voters will decide the fate of 41 candidates in the state. Voters will cast their votes at 9,574 booths.

Meghalaya

Voters will cast their votes on both the 2 constituencies in the state. Over 18,92,716 voters will cast their votes at 3,1 67 booths. A total of 9 candidates are contesting for the elections.


Mizoram

Voting for the only seat in the state will take place today. A total of 7,84,405 voters will cast their votes at 1,175 polling booths. Total of 6 candidates in the state are contesting the elections.

Tripura

Voting for one out of two seats in Tripura will take today. Over 13,47,381 voters will exercise their voting rights at 1,679 booths. A total of 13 candidates are in the fray.

Uttarakhand

Voting in Uttarakhand will take place for all the 5 seats. Over 78,04,523 voters will cast their votes at 11,235 polling booths. A total of 52 candidates are in the fray.

Chhattisgarh

Bastar is the only seat out of 11 seats in Chattisgarh where voting will take place. A total of 13,77,946 voters will exercise their voting rights at 1,878 polling booths. The fate of 7 candidates will be decided in this election.

West Bengal

Voting in West Bengal will take place at 2 out of 42 seats. Over 34,54,276 voters will cast their votes at 3,844 booths. The people of West Bengal will decide the fate of 18 candidates.

Maharashtra

Voting will take place on 7 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra. Over 1,30,35,501 voters will cast their votes at 14,731 polling booths. A total number of candidates in the fray are 116. The list also includes Union minister Nitin Gadkari's seat in Nagpur.

Sikkim

Voting in Sikkim will take place at only one seat with 11 candidates contesting for the election. Over 4,23,325 voters will cast their votes at 567 polling booths.

Nagaland

Voting in Nagaland will take place only at one seat with 4 candidates contesting the elections. A total of 12,06,287 voters will exercise their voting rights at 2,227 polling booths.

Manipur

Voting in Manipur will take place at 1 out of two seats. A total of 10,10,618 voters will cast their votes at 1,562 booths. Voters will decide the fate of 8 candidates in the state.
