World Heritage Day or International Day Of Monuments is observed on April 18 every year. While the day celebrates the existence of such sites, it is important to preserve and nurture this treasure. While India and other parts of the World is filled with such heritage monuments and sites which have archeological importance, there are some structures which were destroyed due to natural calamities like fire and earthquakes.


1. Notre Dame Cathedral: A couple of days back, the 850-year old Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris was devastated in a massive fire. The cathedral is of historical and religious importance and the firefighters were successful in saving a major part of it.


2. Buddhist And Hindu Temples In Nepal: In April, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal that leveled many temples and sites of religious importance. The Boudhanath Stupa, a fifth-century shrine built shortly after the death of Siddhartha, and Swayambhunath, a fifth-century stupa also called the "monkey temple" for a community of sacred monkeys that live onsite were completely destroyed.


3. Philippines Churches: In 2013, an earthquake destroyed some of the oldest churches in the Philippines. Basilica Minore del Santo Niño was heavily damaged in the earthquake.


4. Myanmar Temples: Cyclone Nargis created havoc in Myanmar which killed almost 84500 people. Many small temples and pagodas were destroyed in the earthquake and the Shwedagon Pagoda was sustained by some damage.


5. National Museum of Brazil: On 2 September 2018, the National Museum of Brazil was destroyed by a major fire.
