YouTube has launched its latest service YouTube Music and YouTube Premium in India. The country is a lucrative market for music streaming services. YouTube Music will compete with Spotify which recently launched in India which crossed a million subscribers (both paid and unpaid) within a week of its launch. The USP of Spotify is its algorithm that the company says is best in the category because of its 207 million regular users across the globe. Google announced this week that it is releasing its ad-supported version of YouTube Music which is in the country. It will also launch YouTube Music Premium which is ad-free version charged at ₹99 per month. It will offer background listening and offline downloads.

Google already has their music streaming service Google Play Music in India and they will also get access to YouTube Music as part of their subscription. YouTube has 225 million monthly active users in India alone.

YouTube Premium is the ad-free version of YouTube which has offline and background listening support. Subscribers of YouTube Premium will get YouTube Music Premium as well which will cost ₹129 per month.

Apart from Spotify, India already has Apple Music and Amazon Music services operating in the country. JioSaavn and Gaana are the local players. But only Google has two separate music streaming services in Google Play Music and YouTube Music. Google has said that it will merge the two services at some point. Unlike Spotify, which had legal disputes because of which Ed Sheeran and Cardi B. were unavailable, YouTube Music is fully licensed which gives it a competitive advantage. Samsung Galaxy S10 will ship with four months of free access to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music.

Lyor Cohen, global head of Music, YouTube, said in a release: "India is where the multi-lingual music scene thrives. It's interesting to note how Indian artists have consistently claimed top spots over the last few months in the Global YouTube Top Artists chart. With YouTube Music, we are hoping to bring the best in global and Indian music to millions of fans across India, and give them an immersive music experience, with the magic of music on YouTube."
