Nirmala Sitharaman becomes India's first woman full-time Finance Minister to present the budget for the financial year 2019. While Indira Gandhi handled the position in 1970-71, she managed the ministry as an additional charge while becoming the Prime Minister of India. Nirmala will present Narendra Modi 2.0's first budget in the parliament.

As it is her first budget, she broke this age-old tradition like a true boss lady. While the budget was normally carried in a leather briefcase which changed year after year, Nirmala ditched the bag and instead carried the budget documents wrapped in a red cloth- the traditional 'bahi khaata' way. Neatly bound with the yellow and red ribbon, the Lion Capital shone brightly on top of the bahi khaata.

Chief Economic Advisor K. Subramanian said that it was a departure from "slavery of western tradition". The red cloth symbolises the 'bahi khaata' traditionally used in every Indian business set up to maintain accounts.

It is a tradition to pose with the budget bag outside the Parliament after reaching the venue, Nirmala happily posed with her predecessors.

Let's see what the budget has for the commoners.
