Varalaxmi walks out of ‘Aakasha Mittayee’ accusing producers of male chauvinism

Actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar who was set to feature in her second Malayalam film has walked out of the project suddenly.

Actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has apparently left a Malayalam film and has accused the producers of male chauvinism. The actress had recently signed the project in which she had to play the female lead opposite actor Jayaram. The film titled ‘Aakasha Mittayee’ had started shooting on Friday.  The film is a remake of Tamil film ‘Appa’ and will mark the directorial debut of Samuthirakani in Malayalam cinema. The actress was very excited to be a part of the venture, which would have been her second Malayalam project. The story of the film revolves around the relationship between a father and a son and preaches some parenting lessons though its story.

Her decision to leave the project suddenly has put everyone in a state of shock. She vented her frustration on her twitter account. “Thnk u to Samuthirakani sir n Jayaram sir for hvng supported my decision.. can't work wid male chauvinists n mannerless prods..#respectwomen,” she posted.

The actress has always supported women rights issues and often speaks against unfair treatment of female actors in the industry. The actress was in news recently when she raised the topic of sexual harassment in the industry by sharing her own experiences.  She had revealed that her interation with the programming head of a leading TV channel had turned disastrous when he started making unwanted overtures to her.

The actress had debuted in the Malayalam industry with the film ‘Kasaba’ which featured superstar Mammootty in lead role. The film was heavily criticised for portrayal of its on-screen sexism.
