Sushma Swaraj, former foreign minister and India's "best-loved politician" passed away on Tuesday evening after suffering from a cardiac arrest. Her sudden demise sent shockwaves throughout the country, as she was admired by millions across the country for her making the best use of social media platforms like Twitter, turning it into a helpline for distressed Indians across the globe.

Three years ago, Swaraj had a kidney transplant and she wasn't keeping well lately. The 67-yr-old leader also skipped contesting in the Lok Sabha Election owing to her health concerns. On 6th of August, 2019, around 9 pm, she was rushed to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences by her family as her health started to deteriorate. Nitin Gadkari, Dr Harshvardhan, Rajnath Singh and Smriti Irani were amongst the first ones to arrive at the hospital to check on the ailing leader.

Just a few hours before her demise, Swaraj had posted a congratulatory tweet addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the repealing of Article 370 & 35A and the passing of the J&K Reorganisation bill in parliament. She said, "Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime."

PM Modi took to Twitter to offer his condolences, by tweeting, "A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people."

As the foreign minister of India, Swaraj's scaling of progress and positive changes ranged from helping a father get his VISA for his daughter's surgery, seeking information on relatives stranded in areas hit by natural calamities in other countries to helping people bring home the corpses of relatives from abroad. She even aided foreign nationals to seek an urgent medical visa for their treatment in India.

Offering his condolence, President Ram Nath Kovind described her as "a much loved leader who epitomised dignity, courage & integrity in public life. Ever willing to help others, she will always be remembered for her service to the people of India." Former President Pranab Mukherjee and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also mourned her demise.

A gifted orator, her kindness, warmth, compassion and dry humor had touched many. Sushma Swaraj was a skilled administrator, nine-time parliamentarian, and also the youngest minister of the state of Haryana, back in 1977.
Starting her political career with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the 1970s, she was also a former lawyer of Supreme Court. She has once been the chief minister of Delhi, and later held the portfolios of information and broadcasting, and health in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

BJP working president JP Nadda said, "People would be able to pay their respects to Ms Swaraj at her residence till 11 am and the BJP headquarters from noon. The funeral will be held later in the evening."
