The production banner ‘Lionsgate' is eyeing towards creating a ‘John Wick' cinematic universe after winning the rights to a female centric spec action script titled ‘Ballerina'. According to the sources close to the development, the producers of the film ‘John Wick' after a tense bidding war won the rights to the script of the film, which will serve as the platform for a possible John Wick spin-off. The sources further revealed that Basil Iwanyk, whose Thunder Road banner is behind the hit John Wick action franchise starring Keanu Reeves, will produce ‘Ballerina'.

This recent deal also marked the first time that the script writer Shay Hatten had made a sale. Shay Hatten at the moment is working as a writer's assistant for Robert Downey Jr.'s production company, Team Downey. ‘Ballerina' has been described by the script writer as being in the vein of 'La Femme Nikita', the 1990 female-centric assassin movie that helped launch the career of filmmaker Luc Besson, but the reports also suggested that ‘Ballerina' will be pulpier, hyper-stylized bent a la Quentin Tarantino or Matthew Vaughn.

At this moment, plot details have not been revealed and are being kept under the wraps but some sources claims that the movie will follow the story of a young woman raised as an assassin who must hunt down the other assassins that murdered her family. The sources also added that the script hit the studios last week, with Warner Bros. and Universal also vying for it.
