Legendary cricketer Ajit Wadekar passes away at the age of 77

Former India Test captain, Ajit Wadekar breathed his last at Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital at the age of 77 and with this India has lost one of the legendary cricket gems.

The entire Sports community and the nation was left in a deep shock when the news of former India Test captain, Ajit Wadekar passing away started surfacing the internet.

Yes, the captain that led India won their first-ever Test series in West Indies and England in 1971 made his sudden exit at the age of 77.

Ajit was in a hospital in recent times and passed away due to illness. He is survived by wife Rekha and a son and a daughter who have settled abroad.

Wadekar made his debut in 1966 against West Indies and went on to represent India in 37 Tests and two one-day internationals. He scored 2,113 runs at an average of 31.07 in Tests. He also hit one century and 14 half-centuries.

Mr. Wadekar had a key role in Sachin Tendulkar's cricket career as he was the one who made Sachin open the innings in One-Day Internationals during the tour of New Zealand in the year 1994.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, and many others paid tribute to the legendary cricketer through their social media handles.
