Popeye The Sailor Man remains to be my all-time favourite cartoon! And now Abhilash Tomy is that real-superhero Popeye, who has won many hearts.

An active-duty commander in the Indian Navy, 39-year old Abhilash participated in the Golden Globe 2018 race that involves a gruelling 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe in yachts similar to those 50 years ago and has only the communication equipments advanced and modernized.

Abhilash lost his mast in the maelstrom on Friday in a location that Australian officials described as one of the most remote on earth, some 1,900 miles southwest of Perth in Western Australia. In a text sent to race headquarters in France, Tomy typed out "ROLLED. DISMASTED. SEVERE BACK INJURY. CANNOT GET UP."

Tomy had spent the next four days trapped in his cabin and after his first text message, he was not heard from for almost 24 hours. Later he messaged "CAN MOVE TOES. FEEL NUMB. CAN'T EAT OR DRINK" which was followed by the third message "LUGGED CANS OF ICE TEA. HAVING THAT. VOMITTING CONTINUINGLY. CHEST BURNING."

Tomy was rescued by French Fisheries Patrol Vessel Osiris after which the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Canberra, Australia reported: "Tomy is conscious, talking and on board the Osiris. Australian and Indian long range P8 Orion reconnaissance aircraft are circling overhead."

Abhilash has a Kirti Chakra Award on his name. He circumnavigated the globe in March 2013 under the Sagar Parikrama Project and is recognized as one of the bravest commanders.
