Gangster Abu Salem sentenced to life in jail in 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts

Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan are sentenced to life in jail while Taher Merchant and Feroze Khan are sentenced to death.

A special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court announced life the verdict for Abu Salem and his partners in the 1993 bomb blasts case. Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan are sentenced to life in jail while Taher Merchant and Feroze Khan are sentenced to death. One more convict, Riyaz Siddiqui, was sentenced to 10 years in jail. Salem was extradited from Portugal in 2005, and Lisbon court said that he cannot be awarded death here.

On March 12, 1993, the serial bomb blasts killed 257 people and over 700 were seriously injured. The targets included the Zaveri Bazar, Air India Building, the Bombay Stock Exchange, hotels Sea Rock and Hotel Juhu Centaur. Salem was accused of providing weapons to Sanjay Dutt, who himself was accused of keeping illegal AK-46, some hand grenades, and 250 bullets at his residence. Property worth Rs. 27 crores was damaged. 

A fine of Rs. 200000 is charged to Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan as they have been held for offenses like supplying arms and murder. Mustafa Dossa was the key conspirator died in June due to cardiac arrest and there will be no sentence pronounced against him. 

Many others are accused in the case, including the most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. In the first phase of the trial, of the 123 accused who were tried 100 were convicted, 23 acquitted and two granted pardon after they turned approvers. As a result of that trial, Yakub Memon, brother of Tiger Memon, was found guilty and hanged in July 2015.
