Zoya Akhtar is one of the few female directors in Bollywood today but she has admitted that at one point she had no intentions of making films. The director was present at the Poorna panel discussion in Mumbai along with Rahul Bose, Barkha Dutt and Poorna, the youngest girl to climb the Mount Everest. Zoya spoke about her life and her inspiration in life at the event.

Zoya draws her inspiration from her mother Honey Irani who had to drop out of school at a young age. "My mom was a child star, but she was self-educated as she was pulled out of school. Then my parents got married, and after that she decided that she wants to learn the technicalities of filmmaking. So she went to FTII," she said. Zoya recalled that she used to visit her in Pune to spend the weekends with her.

Though Farhan and Zoya were treated equally by their parents, she faced sexism in college and was infuriated by it. The incident occurred when a girl was not allowed for a late night out but her brother was not stopped from doing the same.

The director went to New York University Film School and did not want to work in Hindi films because she wasn't keen on cinema being made at the time. Zoya chose to do independent films and then she decided to make ‘Luck By Chance' which bombed at the box office. She believes that for every film, the director has to start all over again from scratch.
