ED issues notice to Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for currency smuggling

As per a report in ABP News the Sufi singer; who is a very popular name in India owing to the number of Bollywood tracks the singer has crooned, had been sent a show-cause notice of 45 days after being accused of smuggling foreign currency in India for over 3 years and violating various Forex rules.

Popular Pakistani singer; Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has been booked by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), for illegal smuggling of foreign currency in India.


As per a report in ABP News the Sufi singer; who is a very popular name in India owing to the number of Bollywood tracks the singer has crooned, had been sent a show-cause notice of 45 days after being accused of smuggling foreign currency in India for over 3 years and violating various Forex rules. 


The ED has questioned Rahat for smuggling money amounting up to Rs 2,61,0000 and if the investigative agency is not convinced with the singer's response; he shall be fined for 300 percent of the amount smuggled by him, failing which a lookout notice shall be served to him and he shall be banned from performing in India.


Khan; who was intercepted at the airport along with 2 of his associates, one of them being the singer's manager, however, say's that he had done nothing wrong and they were carrying the money because they were traveling in a group and the act was inadvertent. 


Ironically; this is not the first time that Khan has been embroiled in a currency smuggling case. It may be recalled, that back in 2011, Rahat was found with undocumented cash of $125,000 (Rs 89.1 lakh) at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.


Rahat; became an overnight sensation in India after crooning the super-hit song Jiya Dhadak Dhadak for Kunal Khemmu's 2005 film Kalyug. Following which he went on to give many Bollywood chartbusters including Tere Mast Mast Do Nain (Dabangg), Teri Ore (Singh Is Kinng), Sajda (My Name Is Khan), Teri Meri (Bodyguard) and Jag Jhoomeya (Sultan). 


For the uninitiated; Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is the nephew of the Pakistani legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
