Even before Dear Comrade starring Vijay Deverkonda and Rashmika Mandana hit the theatres, Karan Johar brought the rights of the Hindi remake. He was also the very first person in Bollywood to watch Dear Comrade before anyone else. And soon after Vijay Deverkonda and his team flew to Mumbai, Karan decided to make the film in Hindi and even paid Rs 6 crore to the makers to buy the rights of Dear Comrade.

It was initially reported that Karan would rope in Dhadak duo Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter to play the main roles, but soon Karan rubbished the rumours and tweeted saying, "All the best and big success to the team of #DearComradeOnJuly26th! Also a CLARIFICATION! No lead actors have been considered or approached for the film as yet! The planning for this lovely film is underway!"

But it is now reported that Karan had offered the role to Shahid, who recently featured in blockbuster Kabir Singh, which was a remake of the Vijay's Telugu hit film Arjun Reddy. But it is reported that Shahid refused the role as he wasn't to keen about starring in the remake of Deverakonda starrer. While even Dear Comrade didn't do that well at the box-office.

Shahid in his recent interview with GQ magazine spoke about how he feels like a newcomer even after being in the industry for more than 15 years. He said, "I kind of feel like I don't belong here, I feel like a newcomer. I need to figure out this new room, and this new club that I've entered. Even though I've been here for 15-16 years, it's not my comfort zone, I need to get my head around it. I can't [afford to] feel like I know exactly what's going on, and exactly what I need to do next. So I'm trying to keep it simple, and eventually, I'll go with my instinct and my gut."
