The year 2018 was a completely different year for Bollywood in terms of the movies that did really well on the box-office despite having the competition with the big budget movies. Who knew that low budget movies like Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho or Stree would be a huge success?

We even saw some emerging stars that performed spectacularly on the screen and their low budget movies did well than any of the Khans in Bollywood. The year 2019 also began with a bang and we had some amazing releases -

URI: The Surgical Strike - The combination of Aditya Dhar's direction and Vicky Kaushal's tremendous acting made this a huge success. The movie almost earned 200 crores at the box-office and was critically appreciated by everyone for being one of its kind war movies.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi - The period drama based on the life of Rani Laxmibai was initially directed by Krish, but Kangana Ranaut took the reigns from him halfway through the movie thus Manikarnika became her directorial debut. Though the Queen actress received a lot of criticism, the movie did quite well at the box-office despite the hefty budget.

Thackeray - Thackeray is a biopic made on legendary Balasaheb Thackeray and his journey to the birth and evolution of the political party, Shiv Sena. The already controversial topic became even more controversial when Nawazuddin Siddiqui, a Muslim, was considered for the role of a Hindu Politician. But the actor took all the criticism with stride and played the role to perfection.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga - Directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, ELKDTAL was based on the subject of same-sex love between two women. Starring Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor as the reel father-daughter, the movie was applauded by the audiences for presenting such a sensitive subject in a beautiful manner. Also, the movie Rajkummar Rao and Juhi Chawla were terrific in their performance.

Gully Boy - A movie which created a phenomenon even before its release, Gully Boy is definitely one of the biggest movies of 2019. The movie is inspired by the lives of Mumbai's local rappers Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Naved Shaikh aka Naezy. The clinical depiction of how the class has reset caste boundaries and religion cages us in makes Gully Boy a sharp jab to the conscience.
