Review

Vampire death dealer Selene is back with fellow vampires, Thomas and his son David, but her own hybrid daughter, Eve is missing.

The Lycans are on the hunt again with vicious new leader Marius literally after Eve’s blood which will make him and his clan invincible. But even Selene hasn’t a clue where Eve is.

Director Anna Foerster makes a crisp 92-minute thriller. Selene has to fight Lycan Marius and the cunning Semira who’s an enemy within the vampire ranks. That’s the uncomplicated one-line plot of Underworld: Blood Wars.

Written by Cory Goodman, antagonist Semira’s plot to frame and discredit Selene unfolds soon. But before Semira blackens Selene, there’s a soiree which almost makes you forget you’re watching vampires as evening gowns and red wine swirl.

In fact, in a clear black and white depiction, Selene and her vampires are the good people, if you can call them that, and the shape-changing Lycans are the villains. Like a good people story, Selene’s blood once saved David, hence his father Thomas is beholden to her.

Selene’s a skilled fighter but like good naïve people, she gets taken in by Semira. In a demo combat in a cage, she’s overpowered by Semira’s man who tells Selene, do not trust your opponent to fight with honor.

Fortunately, Selene has honorable David by her side. Together they take on Semira and the Lycans but en route David discovers something about his own mother Amelia who has left a gift for him. And yes, Selene does get a glimpse of her daughter.

The only reminder that this is a vampire story is when they’re either sucking blood for strength or spilling it to avenge evil.

Drinking blood, dripping blood, close-ups of blood, pulling out entrails and vertebrae, are all on the regular menu.

Kate Beckinsale is fighting fit and used to being a bloody good vampire. Lara Pulver as Semira is like the proverbial black witch from a fairy tale.
