Review

Are you a fan of chick lit and chick flicks? I really am not because they're ultimately witlesscaricatures of women.

The writer-director team of Jon Lucas and Scott Moore down the ante if that's possible, with hysterical moms playing predictable chick politics in school this time.

Why overworked Amy cooks, cleans, feeds, works for a living, drives everybody up and down and drives herself round the bend without asking husband Mark to ever chip in, isn't worth asking since that's the basic premise. It's the assumption that that's what all good moms do. And all men are uniformly insensitive boors who must be brought to heel.

Why waking up to reality means doing the complete opposite by drinking, partying, trying to get picked up by strange men, by baffling the kids through overnight neglect and not reporting for work, is also not worth asking. Because that is the big turning point of much-harried moms Amy and her new friends Carla and Kiki.

The war within home and workplace extends into school as Amy and her new drinking pals take on the prim and proper President of the school PTA. President Gwendolyn is a tycoon's wife as vicious as she's rich. Amy's daughter has become Gwendolyn's target, so the mom in Amy wakes up to take her on and run for President.

Guess who wins. Amy delivers a clueless speech about everybody being a bad mom that fetches thunderous applause because moms are so full of love at the end of it all. Amy not only wins the President's post but also wins back her kids, her job and the unattached hunk everybody's been eyeing.

In this overstretched fairy tale the witch also becomes Amy's pal at the end.

Mila Kunis makes exaggerated faces as Amy is supposed to do. Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell as her chick pals follow whatever Amy does. Christina Applegate as Gwendolyn the witchy President is also straight out of Cinderella.

The Verdict
