Assassin’s Creed Movie Review 2016 : Much Action Over An Apple

Assassin’s Creed

The first point that needs to be established is, yes, you can watch Assassin’s Creed the movie, even if you’ve never played the video game.

That said, it’s a fairly complicated premise that revolves around the Apple of Eden which contains the generic code for free will. For the Church, the Apple symbolises the first seeds of disobedience.

But this is no game. It’s a bloody battle down the ages between the Templars who don’t want people to be blessed with free will and the dark, deadly and dedicated Assassins who’re actually the good people who protect the Apple.

The Assassins remind themselves that they work in the dark to save the light and believe that everything is permitted. Free will must prevail and must never be taken away by the Templars.

The violent face-off between the Templars and the Assassins, swings back and forth between 2016 and 1492.

Cal Lynch, a criminal who’s been sentenced to death in a Texas prison in 2016, finds himself in the custody of ruthless Dr Rikkin and his daughter Sofia who run a Templar-funded Foundation in Madrid. Cal’s DNA matches that of Aguilar, the Assassin who saved the Apple from the Templars during the Spanish Inquisition. Through a painful and violent past life regression supervised by Sofia, Cal is taken back to 500 years ago to find the Apple.

Along with a trio of writers, director Justin Kurzel has an eagle soaring high and free in the sky connecting Aguilar with Cal.

Adam Arkapaw’s camera also swoops like an eagle from high up to down below where the action is unrelenting. Aguilar the Assassin and his mentor scale great walls, jump over unending rooftops and spill blood to protect the Apple.

It’s repeated in 2016 by Cal and it’s a high adrenaline fight to protect free will whatever the personal cost to the cheerless Assassins.

What’s also a repeat is that Michael Fassbender with the super body and super fighting skills, wears one grim expression as Cal and Aguilar.

I suspect this is the beginning of a new franchise and we’re going to see more of Cal the brooding Assassin in the months to come.

For a film that’s strictly for those who like bloody action, Assassin’s Creed gets a 3 star rating.
