After abusing the rights of an innocent citizen, novice lawyer Jolly takes on the helm of a corrupt police institution to win back his reputation. This lies at the heart of Subash Kapur’s latest Bollywood venture, Jolly LLB 2.
Our hero is plunged into injustice and corruption from the beginning; and all we want to see are his heroic displays and wicked comebacks, which we did. We enjoyed every bit of Akshay Kumar’s role in this sequel. Akki definitely relayed on the patriotic baton of his earlier characters to his new lawyer avatar, which was exciting to watch! There were moments when the Khiladi pushed our emotional buttons enough to empty all the tissue boxes of the cinema, and there were times where we laughed certain moments out of court.
Despite the great moments, Jolly LLB 2’s showstoppers seem to be the only thing holding the film together. Although it starts with great character introductions and continues to give them memorable traits, they seem to be overplayed and dragging the story down, until another amazing moment pops up. The entire world around Jolly is corrupt, which cannot be emphasized enough, but Jolly simply gets away with too much. Additionally, Huma Qureshi seems to be added into the mix with no value to the story. She doesn’t help him develop in any way; neither does she question his immoral behavior in the beginning.
Overall, this sequel was fun to watch, it had characters that shined bright at moments but also dulled the story at crucial points. The last twenty minutes of the film were so gripping and tense but that is no reason to overlook the major gaps in reasoning and logic. The State vs Jolly LL.B 2 gets a 3.5!
