Indian comedian Vir Das, who was in controversy for his comedy show called Vir Das For India, won an International Emmy Award for his ‘Netflix Special Vir Das: Landing’. This award was a tie with Derry Girls Season3. Before receiving this award, he posted a flashback video of him being called a terrorist, his entire journey from being trolled by Indians till the date winning the International Emmy for India.
He started that video saying, “I would not wish, feeling like you let your entire country down”. He mentioned that when the entire nation called him a terrorist that same night, he was nominated for an Emmy Award. His comedy named ‘Two Indias’, performed in the year 2021, put him in a situation where he felt like ending his life.
His monologue Two Indias was like this, “I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them at night.” And then it went on mentioning many contradictory things in India. The show was at Kennedy Centre in Washington D C. Due to his monologue performed in Washington, there were seven charges put on him because of complaints by a BJP leader. Defaming his own country on foreign soil, insulting India and vilifying the nation are some of the charges filed against him.
He explained in his story how he had suicidal thoughts when he was at Beekman hotel. But later on, as time passed, he started feeling not sorry for the situation and himself. He understood that when people hate you they yell, but love can’t be expressed by yelling. He explained that the intention of that monologue was not to insult the country or hurt Indian sentiments. He was just trying to show both the dark and light sides of a nation which can’t vanish the fact that India has done so many great things.
His journey since that day was really difficult, but from that day to winning the Emmy for India, he reached a milestone. This was his second nomination and first win at the Emmy Awards.
